At any given time, almost six million Americans suffer from chronic, non-healing wounds. Many are associated with complications from diabetes and vascular disorders.  Non-healing wounds also occur in pressure sores and traumatic wounds.

With locations in Elyria and Westlake, University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine uses the most up-to-date approaches to wound healing and remains current in the latest scientific advances in wound care.  An award winning outpatient program that provides treatment for problems wounds, the center is a partnership between UH Elyria Medical Center and HealogicsTM, the largest outsource wound management provider in the nation.

When Should I Consider Using the Wound Care Center?  If you have a sore or wound that is not significantly better in a month, or healed entirely in two months, you should ask your doctor about the Wound Care Center.

The center in Elyria offers four exam rooms and two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen chambers. 

HBO Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has shown to speed the healing of wounds such as diabetic ulcers, arterial and venous ulcers and pressure ulcers.  The chamber surround the patient in 100 percent oxygen at a pressure level about two and a half times greater than normal pressure in the atmosphere.  This helps the patient's blood carry more oxygen to the wound, thus speeding healing time.

Wound Treatments

In addition to HBO therapy, UH Elyria Medical Center Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine offers aggressive wound treatments in the form of:

  • compression therapies
  • dressings
  • topical wound care bioengineered skin products that enhance healing using living cells

The centers are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  No referral is needed. Services are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
