ELYRIA, OH - Dr. Daniel Zanotti and Dr. William Stanfield, orthopedic surgeons at the EMH Center for Orthopedics, have each performed some of the first Zimmer® Patient Specific Instruments knee replacement procedures in the nation. The surgeries took place at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria and Amherst Hospital.
Because everyone's knees are different, the ability to fit a total knee implant to the patient's exact anatomy can be a crucial factor in the function and longevity of the replacement joint. With the Zimmer® Patient Specific Instruments knee, surgeons take information from a highly-precise MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan to create a detailed plan for each patient's surgery. Using this data, custom fitted positioning guides are created that show exactly how the implant should be placed.
Unlike traditional total knee replacement, the Zimmer® Patient Specific Instruments procedure enables surgeons to preserve more bone and ligaments, which contributes to a faster recovery period.
Both surgeons are pleased with their patients' outcomes. According to Dr. Stanfield, "My patients are doing really well, and all of the post-operative indicators look great," he said. "Getting them back to their normal, everyday activities with virtually no pain is my ultimate goal." Dr. Zanotti agreed, and said "With the Zimmer knee, my patients are recovering at a very fast pace, and tell me that they haven't felt this good in years."
